OBITUARY

On Saturday, December 27, our admired colleague Enrique Cerdá Olmedo, founder of the Department of Genetics in 1969, passed away. An active professor from 1972 to 2012, and professor emeritus until 2015, he devoted his research to the study of genetic mechanisms in microorganisms, becoming an international reference in fungal genetics, and to the training of several generations of scientists, supervising a total of 33 doctoral theses. As a researcher, he stood out for his experimental rigor and creativity, and as a professor, he left an indelible mark for the originality and brilliance of his classes. His support for the incorporation of researchers trained as postdocs at other institutions marked one of the hallmarks of the Department, leading to the diversity and scientific level of its more than 40 current lecturers, spread across three different research centers. Those of us who knew him closely will miss his lucidity and the brilliance of his conversation. May he rest in peace.
